Gratitude for an Unforgettable Experience in Tarrafal

I left for Tarrafal driven by a long-held dream of living a different kind of experience, one where I could truly be useful and give something of myself to those who need it most. More than a trip, I was looking for a real connection with the local culture, the people, and their everyday lives. From the very beginning, what motivated me most was the possibility of discovering a place while contributing to a meaningful purpose.

I return with the certainty that I did not come back the same. I came back more sensitive, more aware, and with a much deeper understanding of realities that exist beyond our daily routine. The time spent with the children was what touched me the most. The way they welcome you so naturally and their ability to smile even when they have so little is something I will never forget. There were also emotionally difficult moments, especially when realizing that what is basic for us is still not enough for them. Yet those moments were also the ones that taught me the most.

This experience strengthened in me the importance of being more attentive, more grateful, and more human. It gave me a very clear perspective on what real needs truly are and how often we take what we have for granted. I carry with me the certainty that it is possible to be happy with very little and that small actions can make a real difference in someone’s life.

As for The Green Lion, I can only express deep admiration. It represents a truly different way of traveling, one that allows you to genuinely understand a country, its culture, and its people while actively contributing to a social purpose. There is a very natural balance between cultural immersion and the work on the ground, which makes the whole experience feel authentic, conscious, and deeply meaningful.

I would also like to highlight the way volunteers are welcomed. There is a strong sense of closeness, safety, and trust from the very beginning. It is clear how much they care about our well-being and how committed and dedicated they are to supporting the community every single day. Their sensitivity, professionalism, and emotional awareness deserve real recognition.

It was a privilege to collaborate with you and to witness the impact of your work firsthand. I leave with a deep sense of gratitude for everything you provided and for the way you helped make this experience so meaningful and transformative.
